A dozen media requests to visit detention centres in Australia have been rejected by the immigration department in the past 10 months.

A department official has told a Senate committee all the requests were rejected on "security grounds".

Reporters must sign a deed of agreement in order to access the centres, and at the end of escorted tours the department reviews all media content.
