Judge to investigate Vic auditor-general

Former High Court judge Kenneth Hayne will investigate a staff member's complaint about Victorian Auditor-General John Doyle.

A retired High Court judge will investigate Victorian Auditor-General John Doyle over a staff member's personal grievance complaint.

Mr Doyle said his office will continue to do its work, with a number of reports due in the coming months.

"I will be fully co-operating with the investigation, but will not be making any public comment while proceedings are being undertaken," Mr Doyle said in a statement on Monday.

The Public Accounts and Estimates Committee met on Monday to decide how to investigate the complaint, which was lodged on August 12.

"The committee will seek authority from the parliament to commission recently retired High Court of Australia Justice, Kenneth Hayne AC QC, to investigate the matters referred to in the grievance," a committee statement said.

Mr Hayne will investigate the complaint and whether Mr Doyle should be removed from office.

The committee will report to parliament before October 20.
