Former foreign minister Julie Bishop has ruled out taking a plum overseas posting after bowing out of federal politics.

Ms Bishop, who will officially exit politics when the election is called, said she had already held the "ultimate diplomatic job" and will return to the private sector instead.

"I will return to the private sector, maybe do some work in academia, and obviously continue with some charitable and philanthropic work," she told The West Australian on Friday.
