Junior Kiwis pip Aust League counterparts

The Junior Kiwis have left it late to beat the Junior Kangaroos 15-14 in atrocious conditions in Auckland.

A field goal with 50 seconds remaining has handed New Zealand a 15-14 victory over Australia in their junior rugby league international in Auckland on Saturday.

Wests Tigers five-eighth Te Maire Martin slotted the winning kick for the Junior Kiwis after both teams had missed field goals in the preceding sets at a waterlogged Mt Smart Stadium.

Fullback Clint Gutherson then had a chance to win the game for the Junior Kangaroos but missed a 40m penalty shot.

Constant rain turned the game into an error-riddled arm wrestle, with the scores locked 10-10 at halftime.

New Zealand's tries went to wingers Watson Heleta and Chance Peni in the first half and fullback Kodi Nikorima soon after the break.

Valentine Holmes crossed once in each half for the Junior Kangaroos while fellow-wing Jake Mamo crossed late in the first spell.

The result reverses last year's 38-26 win by Australia in Sydney.
