North Melbourne are enjoying the unfamiliar view from atop the AFL ladder, a position they now occupy for the first time in 18 years.

The Kangaroos boast the only unbeaten record in the competition after an unpredictable opening four rounds after they held firm to beat Fremantle by 31 points on Sunday evening.

"We've still got a lot of things we need to work on, but our ambitions are to be a great side and great sides just find a way to win," North Melbourne midfielder Sam Gibson said on Monday.
