The Kangaroos haven't given up on veteran midfielder Daniel Wells playing a role in their AFL finals campaign despite another injury setback.

Wells suffered a calf strain in the VFL on Saturday playing for North Ballarat.

The two-time club champion, playing in his third VFL match in his return from an Achilles injury, limped off in the third quarter and didn't take any further part in the match.

The 30-year-old hasn't played AFL since round two but the club remain hopeful he will be available for finals.

"Our advice is that the injury is a low-level strain, so nothing major or of too much concern, which is a good result in the circumstances and given his recent Achilles history," said football director Geoff Walsh.

"The medical team will work with him closely over the next couple of days to see how he responds to treatment before we determine his availability."

Walsh said Well still had time to make his case to play.

"We're still two weeks away from the start of finals so we have some time to get him right, all going well."

The Kangaroos, who are eighth on the ladder, play their final round match against fifth-placed Richmond at the MCG on Friday night.
