North Melbourne coach Brad Scott is furious after captain Jack Ziebell gashed his knees on LED lighting on the boundary fence during Saturday's AFL loss to Geelong at GMHBA Stadium.

Ziebell had to leave the field under the blood rule during the third quarter and spent eight minutes receiving medical treatment before being permitted to return to the action.

"We'd get fined if we did something incompetent," Scott told reporters.

"The AFL won't fine themselves I'm sure - they certainly won't give us any money back."

Kangaroos officials will raise the matter with AFL football operations manager Steve Hocking on Tuesday.

"I don't think I'll have to (raise it with the AFL) personally," said Scott.

"I think the powers-that-be will do that."

There was a similar issue at the new Optus Stadium in Perth earlier in the season involving Geelong pair Zach Tuohy and Mark Blicavs, which prompted the installation of protective covering on the LED signage.

Ziebell told ABC Radio it was far from ideal that he had to spend so much time off the ground on Saturday after sustaining the injury when he crashed into the fence while chasing the ball in the forward pocket.

"The safety of players is really important," he said.

"It's not that bad, the cuts, but I had to go off the ground for eight or 10 minutes and that has an effect on our team and rotations and structures.

"... at the minute that fence isn't too safe because I didn't hit it very hard and it gashed me open pretty easily."

Geelong won the match by 37 points.
