Rapper Kanye West has teamed up with American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis to develop a film inspired by his Yeezus album.

West has tapped Ellis to write the screenplay for the new movie project.

The writer tells Vice.com, "He came and asked me to write the film. I didn't want to at first. Then I listened to Yeezus. It was early summer last year and I was driving in my car. He'd given me an advance copy and I thought, regardless of whether I'm right for this project, I want to work with whoever made this.

"That was seven or eight months ago. We'll see what happens," Ellis said.

Ellis collaborated with West in the past when he penned the script to the rapper's American Psycho-themed tribute video as part of a promotional campaign for Yeezus.

Australians will get a closer look at West when he travels Down Under in May for a national tour.

West last visited Australia in 2012, headlining the Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast Big Day Outs. This will be his first solo headlining tour since 2008.
