Katie Holmes is grateful every day to call New York City home.
The actress has lived in Manhattan with daughter Suri, seven, since splitting from husband Tom Cruise in July 2012.
And according to Holmes, New York has been incredibly good to her.
"I love the community in New York. I love New Yorkers," she has told People magazine.
"I ran into someone on the street the other day that I went to high school with. I love the moments of spontaneity every day. New York has been very good to both of us."
The 35-year-old said she enjoys the park's many museums and parks, and makes a point of interacting with people as much as possible while out and about.
"I love the theatre, the galleries in my neighbourhood. Stuff [like] that is so much of what makes me love this city," she said.
"I love the Knicks (basketball team). I love talking to my neighbours in the elevator. I like feeling a part of something big."
Holmes, who made her name on the TV drama Dawson's Creek, said she is focusing on her collaboration with Kohl's department stores to educate women about breast cancer and raise money for the Komen breast-cancer charity.
Holmes said becoming a mother had made her more aware of "the pink elephant in the room".
She added: "I've known a lot of people who have been diagnosed and women tend to take care of everyone else before our own needs.
"Becoming a parent made me much more aware of my own health. I want to be there for my child for a long time.
"Hopefully it will cause women to have the conversation and really support each other through prevention. It (breast cancer) affects one in eight women and anything I can do to help I'm on board with."
