Singer KD Lang feared she had made a big mistake after agreeing to star in the Broadway musical After Midnight without seeing the show.
Lang says she was convinced she did not belong.
The singer will make her debut on the Great White Way this week when she takes over from R&B vocalist Fantasia Barrino in the production, which celebrates jazz icon Duke Ellington's stint at New York City's famous Cotton Club.
Lang reveals she initially turned down the offer to join the cast, but when she was approached by producers for a second time, she decided it was too good an opportunity to miss - even though she had never seen the musical.
It was only when she sat down to take in the show for the first time that Lang realised how daunting the task would be.
"It is outside my comfort zone. It is something that I never thought I'd be doing. I was like: 'Oh, man. I do not fit in. I do not belong here. What they hell did I get myself into...?'"
She told AP, "I was concerned that I had to act or that I had to perform in a way. To me, the most important thing is diving into the emotional narrative of the song. To me, that's everything. When they assured me that I could perform the songs the way I felt them and I didn't have to change to fit the show, that made a lot of sense to me."
Lang will hit the Broadway stage from Tuesday and will remain a part of the After Midnight cast until March 9.
