Cabinet minister Ian Macfarlane says any colleagues who can't keep discussions confidential should quit.

Mr Macfarlane said cabinet confidentiality was necessary for ministers to have "warts and all" discussions about policies.

"In the end, if people can't abide by the confidentiality of the cabinet room they should leave the cabinet," he told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday, after weekend leaks about a cabinet discussion on citizenship law changes.

The minister said he was not the leaker, but he appeared to confirm the accuracy of the reports.

"There has certainly been some very accurate statements made in newspapers in relation to the discussions that were had in cabinet," he said.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Sunday described the reports as "false".
