Keith Spence leaves Oil Search for Santos

Oil Search non-executive director Keith Spence has resigned from the board to become chairman of rival oil and gas producer, Santos.

Keith Spence has resigned as a non-executive director of Oil Search to join rival oil and gas producer Santos as chairman.

Mr Spence, who resigned effective from last Friday, will be appointed to the board in January and succeed Peter Coates as chairman when he retires in February, Santos said in a statement.

Mr Coates said Mr Spence was ideally placed to take over as chairman and would bring extensive global oil and gas experience to the board.

"I am confident that Santos is now positioned to deliver future success and provide sustainable shareholder value," Mr Coates said on Monday.

Mr Spence, who was previously chair of the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority board, said he was honoured to be appointed to the Santos board and is committed to creating long-term value for shareholders.

He will remain chairman of Base Resources and a director of both Independence Group and Murray and Roberts Holdings.

Oil Search said it has commenced an international search for a successor to Mr Spence.

At 1115 AEDT, Santos shares were 2.0 cents, or 0.5 per cent, higher at $4.28.
