Kelly says Cats remain in AFL contention

Midfielder James Kelly says Geelong remain a premiership threat despite the firepower of the AFL's top two teams Sydney and Hawthorn.

Geelong's James Kelly found the Hawthorn-Sydney clash a great game to watch, but the veteran insists the Cats can match the firepower of the AFL's top two teams.

The Cats go into round 19 in third spot on percentage, having won just as many games to match the 13-4 records of Sydney and Hawthorn.

"We're pretty confident over the next four to five weeks we can have a real run at the finals and get some momentum," Kelly said on Thursday.

The triple-premiership player makes his 250th appearance in Saturday night's game against North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium.

Geelong's seven-point win last round against lowly Greater Western Sydney hardly points to a big September for the Cats.

But Kelly is confident the club's glorious run which began with the 2007 flag isn't over yet.

"If we produce what we know we can, we're around the mark," Kelly, 30, told the AFL's website.

"But if we play the way we have and have second-half fadeouts, it's going to be pretty tough for us.

"I watched the Hawthorn and Sydney game (on July 26).

"Those two teams went at it for four quarters and it was a really good game to watch.

"We have to be able to bring that over a long period of time and that's what wins finals."

A loss to the Cats for the second time this season could have a major impact on North's finals' hopes and Kelly is expecting a strong showing from coach Brad Scott's side.

"I read Jack Ziebell's comments today and he was saying they're going to come out and attack and play with that flair that they're really good at," Kelly said.

"I'd expect nothing less from them. They're a really good side and, when they do focus on something during the week, they tend to do it pretty well from what I've seen."
