Jeff Kennett says new Greens leader Richard Di Natale has taken the minor party away from the fairies at the bottom of the hill.

Prominent Liberal Party figure Jeff Kennett has heaped rare praise on new Greens leader Richard Di Natale.

"He's taking them away from the fairies at the bottom of the hill," Mr Kennett told ABC TV.

The former Victorian premier believes the Greens could win over disillusioned Labor supporters at the next election as the opposition "gives up on the traditions on which it was founded".
