Shaun Kenny-Dowall could return to the NRL on Sunday week after the Sydney Roosters star trained for the first time since his arrest and release from hospital.
The New Zealand international took part in a weights session on Monday ahead of an expected light training run on Tuesday night.
Kenny-Dowall was arrested and charged with domestic violence-related offences two weeks ago and he was admitted to hospital because of concerns for his mental welfare.
He missed the Roosters wins over the Warriors and Wests Tigers but coach Trent Robinson says the prolific tryscorer is a chance to be selected for his side's round 22 clash against Newcastle.
"He won't be selected for this weekend (but) he is in a good frame of mind and part of that is training," Robinson said.
"We have to take it day by day. He definitely won't play Friday night (against Canterbury) and then we will assess over the next few weeks, whether he is fit and ready to get back into playing.
"He is much better. I had a good chat with him on Sunday. There is a lot of stress for everyone involved and he is a lot clearer on that and ready to get back into it.
"He came in and did some weights yesterday afternoon and he will come back and start some preliminary training (today).
"He won't do full training but he did get some warm-up done and start getting moving again."
After being sidelined for the Roosters past two games, a "welfare decision" the club made in conjunction with the NRL, Kenny-Dowall was hospitalised last week.
The case against Kenny-Dowall is next due in court on Thursday week.
"Getting some of his closest friends around him is important," Robinson said.
"The boys were happy to see him yesterday afternoon doing some weights."
