Kentucky move into 2nd round of NCAA

The University of Kentucky, featuring Australian big man Isaac Humphries, showed why they are one of the favourites to win the NCAA. Tournament.

Sydney centre Isaac Humphries doesn't make headlines like countryman Ben Simmons, but his University of Kentucky team have stormed into the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Kentucky Wildcats crushed New York's Stony Brook University 85-57 on Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa, to set up a tough contest with Indiana on Saturday.

Kentucky have emerged as one of the favourites to win the knockout tournament after a shaky regular season that included an 18-point loss to Simmons' inconsistent Louisiana State University in January.

Stony Brook, playing in the tournament for the first time in the university's history, had no answer to the Wildcats, a US college basketball powerhouse playing in their 55th tournament.

Kentucky guard Jamal Murray, with 19 points, and centre Skal Labisserie, with 12 points and five blocks, were dominant while 211cm tall Humphries didn't have much of an impact on the game with limited minutes.

Labisserie's improvement in recent weeks has led to less court time for Humphries.

In other games, top seeds North Carolina, Virginia and Kansas were all victorious, while Wichita State caused one of the biggest upsets with a 65-55 result over Arizona and Yale had a surprise win against Baylor.

The University of Hawaii, featuring Melbourne guard Jakob Cornelissen, face a rugged first-round game on Friday against the University of California.

Melbourne 19-year-old Simmons, expected to be the No.1 or No.2 pick in June's NBA Draft, was unable to lead LSU to enough wins to secure an invite to the 68-team tournament.
