Kerber bundled out at Indian Wells tennis

Elena Vesnina stunned Angelique Kerber at the WTA tournament in Indian Wells and Venus Williams reached the quarter-finals after a three-set tussle.

Angelique Kerber will return to the top of the world rankings next week despite being bundled out of the WTA tournament in Indian Wells.

The German fell to 14th-seeded Elena Vesnina 6-3 6-3 in the fourth round.

Venus Williams advanced to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells for the first time since 2001 with a 3-6 6-1 6-3 victory over Shuai Peng, winning the final four games of the match.

"It was so frustrating," Williams said. "But I feel like I got my focus more in that second set and towards the end of the third because I'm just a competitor.

"If things get closer, then I think my better tennis is going to come."

Williams ended her 15-year boycott of the event last year, when she lost in the second round.

Elsewhere, No. 3 seed Karolina Pliskova advanced when 15th-seeded Timea Bacsinszky retired trailing 5-1 in the first set and French Open champion Garbine Muguruza of Spain defeated No.10 seed Elina Svitolina 7-6 (7-5) 1-6 6-0.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova outlasted No.5 seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-4 3-6 6-3 while No.8 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Caroline Garcia 6-1 6-4.

Kristina Mladenovic of France cruised past American Lauren Davis 6-3 6-3 while Madison Keys is taking on Caroline Wozniaki in the remaining round of 16 encounter.
