Angelique Kerber has set a string of records by defeating Serena Williams in the Australian Open final.

ANGELIQUE KERBER'S STUNNING AUSTRALIAN OPEN SUCCESS:

* Kerber's first grand slam title

* First grand slam win by a German since Steffi Graf in 1999

* First left-hander to win the Australian Open since Monica Seles in 1996

* Just the fourth woman to defeat Serena Williams in a grand slam final and the first since Australian Samantha Stosur at the 2011 US Open

* Second woman in the Open era to save a match point in the first round of a grand slam and win the title

* First woman to win the Australian Open the year after a first-round exit since 1977

* Lowest-ranked winner of the Australian Open since 2007, when Serena Williams won as world No.81

* Turned 28 on the opening day of the Australian Open

* Will improve her ranking to a career-high world No.2 on Monday
