There will be a logjam of All Blacks halfbacks at the Chiefs after Tawera Kerr-Barlow signed for a further two Super Rugby seasons.
The 15-Test veteran will contest the No.9 berth with Augustine Pulu and Brad Weber, who have made their All Blacks debuts over the last year.
Kerr-Barlow missed the entire 2015 campaign because of the serious knee injury he suffered nine months ago on Test duty in South Africa.
He returned to the field this month for New Zealand Maori and is attempting to prove his fitness for the World Cup after being included in the 41-man All Blacks squad.
Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says Kerr-Barlow had displayed an admirable work ethic to recover from his injury.
"Tawera is incredibly professional. His dedication to rehab and developing other parts of his game throughout his time out has been impressive. He is in fantastic condition," he said.
"I know he is hungry to get back to top level footy."
Kerr-Barlow, who also committed to two more NPC seasons with Waikato, has played 56 games for the Chiefs since 2011.
