KEY MATCH-UPS AT THE FOUR DAY PAN PACS SWIMMING IN TOKYO STARTING ON THURSDAY
CATE CAMPBELL (Australia) v SIMONE MANUEL (United States) - 100m freestyle
Back with a vengeance from a post-Rio sabbatical, Campbell will get to see how far she has really come since her 2016 Olympic heartache when she lines up against the world's form sprinter in Manuel. Campbell won't get a chance to test herself against Manuel's fellow co-Olympic champion Penny Oleksiak after the Canadian's Pan Pacs withdrawal.
ARIARNE TITMUS (Australia) v KATIE LEDECKY (United States) - 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle
American Ledecky has been unstoppable in distance freestyle since bursting onto the scene at the 2012 Olympics as a 15-year-old. But suddenly the multiple Olympic and world champion is looking over her shoulder. Titmus - just 17 - announced her arrival at April's Commonwealth Games with three gold. Titmus has pulled out of the Pan Pacs event that was considered her best chance to dethrone Ledecky - the 200m - but is expected to make her presence felt in the 400m and 800m.
KYLE CHALMERS (Australia) v CAELEB DRESSEL (United States) - 100m freestyle
Olympic champion Chalmers faces his biggest test since his shock Rio 100m gold when he takes on swimming's new star Dressel. Chalmers, 20, returned from taking 2017 off to correct a heart problem by claiming four gold at April's Commonwealth Games but had to settle for 100m silver on the Gold Coast. He will look to go one better against Dressel, who equalled Michael Phelps' record of seven gold at last year's world titles.
EMILY SEEBOHM (Australia) v KATHLEEN BAKER (United States) - 100m, 200m backstroke
Seebohm has had her share of dramas in her 11-year international career. And it seems her mental toughness will again be tested at the Pan Pacs as she copes with a very public break-up with teammate Mitch Larkin. Baker warmed up for the Pan Pacs by breaking the 100m world record at US trials.
MITCH LARKIN (Australia) v RYAN MURPHY (United States)
Larkin may appear in great touch ahead of the Pan Pacs but he has made headlines for all the wrong reasons in the lead-up. Following the break-up with Seebohm, Larkin faces a test of character at Tokyo. He has kept his silence over the very public split but will look to make a statement at the Pan Pacs - and maybe a bit of Rio payback against Murphy, who relegated Larkin to Olympic 100m silver.
