Usman Khawaja has avoided serious injury from a fielding mishap late on the opening day of the fifth Ashes Test.

Khawaja limped off the SCG alongside the team's physio after he slid awkwardly trying to chase down a Dawid Malan cover drive on Thursday afternoon.

The 31-year-old got up holding his left leg after he attempted to slide to stop a boundary in the deep, but only succeeded in digging his right knee into the turf leaving a large divot.

Drinks were called and Khawaja left the field immediately, only to return four overs later.

The clearance will come as a massive relief to Khawaja, who desperately needs runs in the final Test of the series.

He and opener Cameron Bancroft are the only top-order batsmen not to have posted a century during Australia's three wins and one draw

Khawaja has endured an up-and-down year for the Aussies, after having been dropped for the Test tour of India in March, before being recalled against Bangladesh.

However his stint back in the side lasted just one match, dropped again after Australia's first ever shock loss to the No.9 ranked team in August.

He was picked again for the home Ashes series, but an average of 27 has again left his spot not entirely secured for March's four-Test tour of South Africa.
