A bizarre new ad campaign featuring children’s cartoons laced with excerpts from alcohol advertising will launch today in an effort to get booze ads banned from prime time television.

The campaign was produced by a coalition of health organisations, including the Cancer Council Victoria and the Victorian Alcohol and Drug Association.

Sondra Davoren, spokesperson for the group, said in a press release alcohol marketing during sport needed an “urgent rethink”.

“Every weekend, almost half of all alcohol ads are aired before 8.30 pm, when kids are watching in large numbers,” she said.

“If alcohol advertising doesn't belong during kids' cartoons, why is it okay during live sport when it is likely more children will be watching?”

The Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull, has been contacted for comment.
