Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday to take a jab at her former rival, Donald Trump.

The 2016 Democratic presidential candidate joined a string of celebrities in a pre-recorded 'audition tape' for the spoken word edition of journalist Michael Wolff's Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.

The sketch involved the celebrities - including Cher, John Legend and Snoop Dogg - dramatically reading sections of the controversial account of Trump's White House to Grammys host James Corden.

Ms Clinton's section of the novel focused on Mr Trump's paranoia around being poisoned.

"He had a longtime fear about being poisoned - one reason why he liked to eat at McDonald's. No one knew he was coming and the food was safely pre-made," she read.

"The Grammy's in the bag," Clinton, whose confidence during her race against Mr Trump proved ill-advised, quipped.

Rapper Cardi B went off-script at one point: "I can't believe this ... That's how he lives his life?"

But not everyone was impressed. US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley tweeted the segment "killed" the night.

Donald Trump Jr - the son of the US President - was similarly unimpressed.
