State media in the isolated country has released a photo showing a smiling and windswept Kim standing on the snow-covered summit of Mount Paektu.

It quotes him saying the hike provides mental energy more powerful than nuclear weapons.

The story is the latest run by state media on the feats of the Kim dynasty, which has ruled for more than six decades with an iron fist and pervasive personality cult.

The 2,750 metre high volcanic mountain borders China and is thought to be a sacred place in Korean folklore.
