Former Australian High Court judge Michael Kirby says he's heard many 'grim' stories of human rights abuses in North Korea, in his role as a United Nations investigator.

Mr Kirby is preparing his final report on his 12-month investigation on behalf of the UN's Human Rights Council.

He says it will be up to the international community to decide how to respond after the report is released next month.

But he's told Naomi Selvaratnam it's important that the stories of alleged human rights victims in North Korea have been recorded and shared.
