A celebratory kiss by newly-drafted Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the National Football League, has lit up news feeds and social media sites.
Sam, 24, was on Saturday picked 249th among the 256 picks for next season's draft by the St Louis Rams.
ESPN had a camera rolling on Sam and his boyfriend as he got the call from Rams coach Jeff Fisher summoning him to the team.
Sam sobbed into the phone over the good news, and his boyfriend put his arms around him and also cried.
After he hung up, the two embraced and kissed.
Sam, who made his mark as a defensive end at the University of Missouri, now must prove himself as a team member to make the final cut.
He later quipped to reporters that he knew he was going to be picked somewhere.
Fisher told the NFL Network that he liked to use his final round of choices "for players you want to give an opportunity to."
"I haven't said a whole lot to anybody over the last week or so, but after doing the studies, this is a good football player," Fisher said.
US President Barack Obama on Saturday called the selection "an important step forward."
But not everyone was happy about the pick. Don Jones, a player for the Miami Dolphins, tweeted "OMG" and "horrible," according to ESPN.
Although the tweets were later deleted, Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey chided Jones, saying he was "disappointed" and planned to have a talk with him.
