Kiwi quits Games over "cannibal" tag

New Zealand weightlifter Douglas Sekone-Fraser has quit the Pacific Games in PNG after using the hashtag "cannibals" on pictures from the opening ceremony

A New Zealand weightlifter has withdrawn from the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea after posting pictures on Instagram of dancers in ceremonial dress preparing for the opening ceremony with the hashtag "cannibals."

The New Zealand Olympic Committee confirmed on Monday that Douglas Sekone-Fraser had "withdrawn from the New Zealand team" and had apologised for causing offense.

Spokesperson Ashley Abbott said the NZOC was "deeply disappointed" with Sekone-Fraser's actions.

She said his comments "do not in any way reflect the thoughts of the wider New Zealand Pacific Games team who have had enjoyed a warm and welcoming experience in Port Moresby."

New Zealand has sent a team of 65 athletes to the games, including 35 weightlifters to the four-yearly games.

Sekone-Fraser's Instgram account has since been closed.
