Kiwis beat Aus at lifesaving championships

Australia has finished second behind New Zealand in the race for overall champion nation at the lifesaving world championships in France.

Australia has dominated the ocean events, but fallen just short of being crowned overall champion at the lifesaving world championships in France.

Australia finished second overall, falling 22 points shy of defending champions New Zealand at Rescue 2014.

Host nation France finished third.

The Australian squad dominated the ocean competition, with ironman and team captain Shannon Eckstein winning the oceanman, surf race and board race.

Olympian Naomi Flood was also a multiple winner, taking out the oceanwoman and single ski.

"In the end the Kiwis were just too good," Australian team manager Keith Caldwell said.

The Australian team of Miranda Bell, Flood and Kristyl Smith also claimed gold in the oceanwoman relay.

There was bad news for nine-time Australian beach flags champion Melissa Howard.

Howard broke her collarbone in the event's final and had to be stretchered off the beach while her fiance, New Zealand competitor Paul Cracroft-Wilson, watched on.

She will undergo surgery in Montpellier on Tuesday (AEDT).

"Certainly a sad exit for Mel- the entire team were all obviously most concerned," Caldwell said.

"But she's a fighter and we know she'll be back better than ever."

The Australian Youth team fared better, topping the overall, ocean and pool points tables.
