Kiwis win cancelled visa appeals

Out of 533 New Zealanders whose visas have been automatically cancelled on character grounds, 36 have won appeals to have them reinstated.

Thirty-six New Zealanders whose Australian visas were cancelled on character grounds have had decisions overturned.

A Senate hearing on Monday was told 533 New Zealanders have had their visas automatically revoked since December 2014 because of a law change.

There are 367 people challenging the decision with the immigration minister and so far 73 cases have been finalised with 36 successful.

The hearing was told there are 183 New Zealanders in onshore immigration detention.
