A relieved Michael Klim declared himself satisfied with the first competitive swim of his comeback.

The 34-year-old dual Olympic gold medalist swam at a 100m time trial as part of a 200m freestyle race and a 50m race in the Victorian qualifying meeting at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday.

He registered 23.11s for the 50m sprint to win his heat but there was some confusion over his time over the 100m distance.

The touch-pad did not register properly and, while he was given a time of 51.03s, Klim said his coach recorded him at 49.80s.

Aiming at a spot on the Australian squad for next year's London Olympics, Klim described the hit-out as "a really good start for me."

"I think in terms of the way I raced and managing my nerves, it was good to be able to get it out of the way," Klim said.

"I can now really prepare for the Queensland states and the Victorian states here.

"I think I'm going really well, I've got a great team and everyone's on the same boat."

Klim has been away from competitive swimming for more than four-and-a-half years but has been motivated to return by comebacks launched by Ian Thorpe and Libby Trickett and the success of Geoff Huegill.
