Kohli demands more from triumphant India

Virat Kohli says India's first Test victory against Australia merely lays a platform for the rest of the four-match series.

Virat Kohli says it's not hard to be humble because a "special" first Test win over Australia isn't perfect in every way.

Kohli has hailed India's achievement in winning the opening Test of a series in Australia for the first time in a dozen attempts.

But the Indian captain is demanding improvement on a 31-run triumph in Adelaide which, he says, merely sets a platform for the four-match series.

"We have never taken the lead in a series in Australia ... that for us is a huge, huge boost," Kohli said.

"And it has given us the right momentum that we needed to play a big series like this ... it's a very special feeling.

"But having never done it in Australia before, to take the lead first up, it's obviously a very, very good achievement ... and something we are very looking forward to build on."

Kohli took pride in India's fightback from a parlous opening session on day one when the visitors slipped to 4-41.

From then, anchored by man-of-the-match Cheteshwar Pujara's first-innings 123 and top score in the second dig of 71, the Indians bossed the Australians.

"Picking up 20 wickets in a Test match away from home, especially with a ball that does not offer you so much, is something that we can be proud of," he said.

"But, as I said, we need to build on this.

"We can't be happy with one Test match ... we are not going to be satisfied with one Test.

"Just be happy about this victory. But this is what we need to build on and really capitalise on."

Kohli always remained confident of victory, even as Australia's tail wagged - the home side's initial five wickets cost 115 runs, the last five cost 176.

"We knew that they (Australia) are not just going to throw in the towel," he said.

"Their tail is, I think, in the top three when it comes to lower-order averages in the world in the past couple of years.

"They put a price on their wicket and we certainly expected them to fight."
