George Bailey's Kings XI Punjab have suffered a disappointing loss in the IPL final as the Kolkata Knight Riders claimed a three-wicket win in their 20th over.

After Kolkata won the toss, the Australian skipper's side were sent in to bat and notched up 23 runs before losing their first wicket in the fourth over.

Bailey, promoting himself to number three, put a solitary run on the board before being sent packing after stepping too far to the off side and missing a straight delivery from Sunil Narine.

Wriddhiman Saha followed and dominated the remainder of the the Kings' innings as he put on 115 in a 55-ball knock.

A big cheer came up from the crowd as big-hitting Glenn Maxwell stepped up to the crease, but the Aussie proved unimpressive as he sent his first ball into the air and was caught at short third man.

As Kolkata stepped up to reply to the 200-run target, Mitchell Johnson seemed determined to assert dominance, snatching opener Robin Uthappa's wicket within the first over.

However, man-of-the-match Manish Pandey then settled in for a long stay, putting on 94 before slicing a Karanveer Singh ball high over cover, where Bailey took the catch.

As Kolkata looked for 15 off 12 balls, Johnson took another important wicket in the 19th to dispose of Suryakumar Yadav, but a half-tracker was hit for six by Piyush Chawla off the final ball of the over, leaving Kolkata needing only five off the last over.

With three balls to spare, Chawla then struck a four to hand Punjab the title.
