Kookaburras fight back to stun Germans

The Kookaburras have beaten Olympic hockey champions Germany 4-3 in an exciting Champions Trophy clash in London.

The Kookaburras have beaten Olympic hockey champions Germany 4-3 in a thrilling Champions Trophy clash at London's Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

On a wet and cold afternoon in the British capital, Graham Reid's side took some time to warm up and found themselves trailing 2-0 after 14 minutes following a Florian Fuchs penalty corner and a Tobias Hauke strike.

Australia fought back and early in the second quarter Flynn Ogilvie passed to Glenn Turner who lightly tapped the ball past the German goalkeeper and into the net.

Buoyed by Turner's strike, the Kookaburras levelled the score in the 22nd minute when Tristan White smashed the ball home following some good work by Daniel Beale.

However, right on the half-time buzzer Fuchs restored the German's lead from close range.

The third quarter saw a lot of opportunities for the Australian team with Blake Govers nailing a penalty corner with an excellent drag flick to level the scores.

Aran Zalewski then scored a penalty corner goal in the final quarter to seal the victory.

"I thought we started well," Reid said.

"Unfortunately they got a goal against the run of play ... then they got another goal so it was two nil which put us behind the eight ball.

"I thought we came back very well. In the second quarter we came back to two all so it was great, then we had a lapse and came back again. It was a really good effort, and I think that game will provide us with a lot of things to work on between now and Rio."
