Kookaburras thrash hosts in Malaysia

The Kookaburras have matched their Azlan Shah Cup opening win over India, with another 5-1 victory, this time over hosts Malaysia.

In a performance that included a spell of three goals in two minutes, Australia have downed hosts Malaysia 5-1 at the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament.

After beating India by the same margin in their opening match, the world No.1 Kookaburras again came out firing in Saturday's match, with two penalty corner attempts in the first quarter.

However, Malaysia's defending was on point, and it was the hosts who put the first points on the board in the second quarter, before Australia's Jake Whetton levelled the score going into halftime.

The second half belonged to the Kookaburras as they took over the game with three goals in two minutes, two from Flynn Ogilvie and one from Matt Gohdes.

Tom Craig extended Australia's lead to 5-1 minutes before the final siren.

Kookaburras coach Graham Reid said he was pleased with how his side had created opportunities.

"We started the best we have in a while, and the first and third quarters were really great for us," he said.

"We still have a lot more work to do because we did give them a lot of chances, but the score was more along the lines of what it should have been this evening."

Australia next face Pakistan on Sunday at 8.05pm AEST.
