Skipper Mark Knowles is among a trio of experienced stars recalled to the Kookaburras' squad for next month's World League final in India.

Matthew Swann and Tyler Lovell have also been included after all three had been rested for last week's International Festival of Hockey triumph in Victoria.

"We're pleased to welcome back a number of players who we gave the opportunity to freshen up during the International Festival of Hockey, with a view to being in prime condition for the World League Final," head coach Colin Batch said.

"We're optimistic we'll see positive results from giving them that opportunity to refresh before we take on some of the best teams in the world."

Defender Josh Beltz (knee) and forward Trent Mitton (thumb) are unavailable for what will Australia's final tournament of the year.

The world No.2 Kookaburras will face off against India (sixth), Germany (fifth) and England (seventh) in the group stage.

Possible finals await against world No.1 Argentina, Belgium (third), Spain (ninth) and Netherlands (fourth), who had knocked Australia out in Rio.

Batch said his squad's performance will be a crucial measuring stick ahead of a big 2018 that includes the Commonwealth Games and World Cup.

"This is a good opportunity to play against European teams and to test where we're at after a lot of changes this year in the squad," Batch said.

"We've not played against Argentina and the Netherlands for a while and we've not played Germany this year either, so that's why this is a valuable tournament for us."
