Kyrgios backs World Cup-style Davis Cup

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is sad to see the end of home-and-away Davis Cup ties but believes the new World Cup-style format will prove a winner.

Nick Kyrgios feels Davis Cup has lost some of its magic, but has pledged to "always" commit to the 118-year-old teams' event no matter what the format.

The Australian No.1 believes the controversial new World Cup-style format will prove a winner, but admits the abolition of the home-and-away element is sad.

"Obviously the home and away ties was the thing that made Davis Cup special," Kyrgios told AAP ahead of the US Open in New York.

"I've had some unbelievable memories of Davis Cup at home and away.

"The (semi-final) tie I played at Belgium (last year) was one of the most difficult ties I've played in, but also one of the most fun.

"That's not there anymore so it's lost it's kind of Davis Cup feel a bit, I think."

Overall, Kyrgios supports the International Tennis Federation's overhaul of the Davis Cup to an end-of-year contest featuring 18 teams at a neutral venue from 2019.

"I think the changes are good," he said.

"Having a World Cup for tennis is a good idea. I definitely think it's more entertaining for the crowd to have all the players in one place at one time.

"My feelings towards Davis Cup haven't changed. I want to always play. I like being out there with my team and I love team events so I'll always going to be looking forward to playing Davis Cup.

"It's going to be a massive sporting event, which will be pretty cool."

Kyrgios backed up his approval by declaring his availability for next month's seemingly meaningless World Group play-off in Austria.

"Obviously it's not as meaningful as other ties knowing we're going to be in the same group regardless of whether we win or lose," he said.

"But I don't know if it's meaningless."
