The mother of the Australian teenager who beat world No.1 Rafael Nadal to pull off one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history says he can repeat the performance.
World No. 144 Nick Kyrgios, 19, now faces Canadian eighth seed Milos Raonic on Wednesday for a place in the semi-finals, after he defeated the Spaniard in just under three hours.
His mother Norlaila Kyrgios told Channel Nine he would be able to repeat his performance.
"I think he's going to go all out," Mrs Kyrgios told A Current Affair.
Mrs Kyrgios said she had believed in her son since he first picked up his racquet, but revealed her doubts he could topple the world No.1 may have helped spur him on.
"I guess I said something about Nadal being too strong for him and he heard me and he got a bit angry about that, so I think that drove him a bit more just to prove me wrong," Mrs Kyrgios said.
After his 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory on Tuesday Kyrgios told reporters he had read what his mother, who watched the match from her Canberra home, had said.
"Last night, I was reading a comment that she thought Rafa was too good for me," said Kyrgios.
"It actually made me a bit angry."
Kyrgios is from a tight-knit family but his mother and brother Christos have remained in Canberra while his father George and sister Halimah are at Wimbledon with him.
Mrs Kyrgios said she was happy, proud and exhausted.
"It may seem like he just burst onto the scene but it's a long road and a lot of hard work," she said.
Kyrgios became the first teenager to defeat a world No.1 at a grand slam since Nadal did it against Roger Federer at Roland Garros in 2005.
