There are questions over the participation of Australia's two top men's players at the French Open after Nick Kyrgios joined Bernard Tomic in retiring from the Nice ATP event on Wednesday.

Four days out from the second grand slam of the year, Kyrgios retired when down 4-3 in a second round match against Dominic Thiem.

Kyrgios, who has had a string of injuries during his brief but thus far spectacular career which has included two grand slam quarter-finals, was seen to frequently clutch at his elbow during the match.

It was reported that he received treatment during the set but opted to pull out before its completion.

Kyrgios' withdrawal follows Tomic's exit on Tuesday.

Tomic, also ranked in the top 30, withdrew from a first round match when he lost the first set citing a virus.
