Kyrgios to make Stuttgart grass debut

Described by the tournament boss as "a multi-faceted player complete with corners and edges", Nick Kyrgios will make his Stuttgart ATP event debut next year.

Nick Kyrgios will spice up next June's Mercedes Cup with a debut appearance at the pre-Wimbledon event in Stuttgart, which switched in 2016 from clay to grass.

Kyrgios was announced on Wednesday as an entry by organisers, who are awaiting the arrival of the box office dynamite to Germany's car-making capital.

The 22-year-old from Canberra has yet to win a title this season after earning three in 2016. He was fined almost $A40,000 for on-court incidents and arguments last week at the Shanghai Masters.

Part of the reason for Kyrgios joining the field at the hilltop Weissenhof club is said to be his desire to improve on a Wimbledon quarter-final from 2014.

Stuttgart serves as the starting line for the three-week pre-Wimbledon season.

"I'm looking forward to playing for the Mercedes Cup for the first time in the coming year. I've never made a secret out of my love for grass tennis," he said in a statement.

"I will begin my grass season 2018 in Stuttgart. On the tour, it's said that the Weissenhof courts are kept in excellent condition and spectators are extremely enthusiastic. The Mercedes Cup 2018 will certainly be an exciting tournament for me."

Kyrgios will join a field which includes Grigor Dimitrov at an event where Roger Federer has played the past two years.

"We are delighted to be able to present another very interesting player with Nick Kyrgios at the Weissenhof next year," tournament boss Edwin Weindorfer said. "Kyrgios is one of the hottest players in international tennis.

"He has impressively proved this year with victories over Rafael Nadal in Cincinnati and Novak Djokovic in Acapulco and Indian Wells. The Stuttgart audience can look forward to a multi-faceted player complete with corners and edges."
