A former head of the national body representing ethnic communities has accused the Australian Labor party of abandoning the passion for multiculturalism instilled by Gough Whitlam.

Vic Ribakoff is the former chairman of the Federation of Ethnic Communities' Councils of Australia.

He describes the late Mr Whitlam as a giant of multiculturalism, who -- among other great achievements -- helped bring English as a second language classes to migrant schoolchildren and adults.

Mr Ribakoff is speaking to Kristina Kukolja.
