Labor call for probe into My Health Record

Labor has called for a Senate inquiry into the laws, regulations and rules of the government's electronic My Health Record system.

Labor wants a fine-tooth comb to be run over the laws, regulations and rules underpinning the government's electronic health record system.

The federal opposition called for the Senate inquiry on Tuesday amid "ongoing privacy and security concerns" into My Health Record, which they want to be complete before the end of the opt-out period in mid-November.

The system has come under fire for electronic security reasons, with Health Minister Greg Hunt revealing last week the laws would be changed so police and government agencies will need a court order to obtain patient data.

While Labor supports the system, MPs want answers on issues including the adequacy of log-in procedures, default settings, and the potential for health insurers to be given access to data.

The system was released for national public access last month after a six-year trial, with legal experts since warning of a loophole which could put family violence victims at risk.

Legal experts say a violent person could create a record for their child without their ex-partner's consent, potentially allowing them to track down their estranged family's location.

The opposition says the "bungled" rollout of the system should be suspended until there is more clarity on such concerns.

Soon after Labor's announcement Mr Hunt labelled it a political stunt, saying they were aware he was already referring the matter to the Senate.

"They were just trying to get in ahead," he tweeted.

Australian Conservatives leader Cory Bernardi believes there's no need for an inquiry as there are higher priorities.
