Labor coy about GST on overseas purchases

Federal Labor leader Bill Shorten says the opposition won't support increasing or broadening the GST.

Bill Shorten won't commit Labor to supporting a change in the GST-free threshold for online overseas purchases, even though he considered the measure in government.

The nation's treasurers, meeting in Canberra on Friday, are expected to sign-off on a proposal that reduces the threshold from $1000 to zero.

"We haven't seen enough of the detail but we do not support increasing the GST or broadening the GST," the federal opposition leader told reporters in Perth.
