Labor dismisses Newman budget claims

Labor says Maurice Newman is a supporter of the Liberal Party supporting the Liberal Party, after his criticism of opponents to the budget.

Labor has rejected criticism from Tony Abbott's top business adviser that opponents of the budget should provide an alternative or pass the government's package.

Maurice Newman has lashed out at the political impasse over the budget, saying critics can "huff and puff" about broken promises but the country's fiscal problems need to be fixed.

But opposition finance spokesman Tony Burke dismissed the comments as a "supporter of the Liberal Party supports the Liberal Party".

"He wants us to be completely forgiving of a prime minister who breaks his promises," he told Sky News on Thursday.

Mr Burke also hit out at comments from BHP boss Andrew Mackenzie, who said the budget pain had been fairly shared around the whole community, including business.

"I'm not surprised if people who haven't been hurt by the budget find it fair," he said, adding it was lower and middle-income earners who had been hit by the budget.

"It's a bit much to just tell them it's fair when they're the ones who are disproportionately feeling the pain of the budget."
