Labor finally getting it on pensions: govt

Labor appears to be getting past its default opposition to all government plans, the social services minister says.

The federal government hopes Labor is finally getting past its "head in the sand" position on changes to the age pension.

Social Services Minister Scott Morrison says Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's willingness to work with the government about a proposal to reduce the part-pensions of wealthier retirees appears to show he is seeing the bigger picture.

"I welcome the fact that Bill Shorten seems to be moving away from his very recalcitrant position on this - his head in the sand position on a fair and sustainable pension," Mr Morrison told reporters in Sydney on Thursday.
