Labor's lead over the coalition has narrowed as Prime Minister Tony Abbott's approval rating rose above Opposition Leader Bill Shorten's for the first time since April last year.

A weekend Newspoll for News Corp, published on Tuesday, showed Labor with a two-party preferred lead of 52 to 48 per cent, down from 53 to 47 per cent two weeks ago.

Over the same period, Mr Shorten's satisfaction rating fell three points to 32 per cent while dissatisfaction with his performance jumped four points to 50 per cent. That gives him a net approval rating of minus 18 points, down from minus 11 points.

Mr Abbott's net approval rating also sank from minus 13 to minus 15 points, but it remains the first time since April last year that his rating has been better than Mr Shorten's.

His satisfaction rating in the poll of 1169 voters dropped from 39 to 38 per cent, while dissatisfaction rose from 52 to 53 per cent.

Mr Shorten also lost ground with regards to who voters believe would make a better prime minister.

While Mr Abbott's rating remained unchanged at an eight-month high of 41 per cent, Mr Shorten fell three points to a 13-month low of 37 per cent.
