Labor questions value of batts inquiry

Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus wonders whether the royal commission into the pink batts scheme has been value for money.

Labor has cast doubt over whether the $20 million royal commission into the botched home insulation scheme has been value for money.

The report tabled in parliament on Monday found the former Rudd government had poorly planned and implemented the program.

Installers Matthew Fuller, Rueben Barnes, Marcus Wilson and Mitchell Sweeney died in 2009 and 2010. The program was terminated on February 19, 2010.

Shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus hopes the families of the four young men find some solace from the report.

But he says the report didn't advance the issue much further than past investigations.

"The inquiry, which has cost $20 million of taxpayers money, does not seem to have added a great deal to the eight previous inquiries," Mr Dreyfus said.

He conceded the program could have been better managed but maintained it was part of a successful stimulus program that had kept Australia out of recession during the global financial crisis.

Mr Dreyfus played down suggestions Labor was culpable, saying the report would speak for itself.
