Labor rules on women need work: Gallagher

Former ACT chief minister-turned-senator Katy Gallagher says there are structural and cultural factors which preclud women within Labor from certain roles.

ACT Labor senator Katy Gallagher believes there are structural and cultural issues within the opposition which exclude women from certain roles.

A lobby group that supports Labor women, Emily's List, reportedly wants rule changes at the party's national conference to ensure women get half all preselections, constitute half the party's national executive and make up half all union delegations to conferences.

"There's definitely some structural inequality there," Ms Gallagher told Sky News on Monday, adding it was not just an issue for Labor but parliament more broadly.
