Federal Labor wants the government to provide a quarterly report to parliament on the treatment of Australia's live animal exports.

Opposition agriculture spokesman Joel Fitzgibbon told the Labor caucus on Tuesday that as well as an inspector-general of animal welfare he would be seeking regular reports to parliament.

The issue, mentioned by several concerned Labor MPs at the meeting, returned to the spotlight following a media report of Australian cattle being bludgeoned to death in Vietnam.
