Labor has called on the prime minister to clarify the future of stood-aside minister Arthur Sinodinos.

Senator Sinodinos has stood down from his role as assistant treasurer while he awaits the findings of a NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) inquiry.

The inquiry heard that the former NSW Liberal Party treasurer received $200,000 a year for less than 100 hours of work for Australian Water Holdings and that the company allegedly billed NSW government body Sydney Water for Liberal Party donations.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says Senator Sinodinos and Prime Minister Tony Abbott have questions to answer.

"The prime minister should explain to Australians when we will have an assistant treasurer," he told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

Mr Abbott also had issues he needed to explain around Liberal Party fundraising in NSW.

Treasurer Joe Hockey said at the weekend he was confident Senator Sinodinos would return to the frontbench as assistant treasurer.

Senator Sinodinos is expected to appear before further ICAC hearings in August to give evidence about other aspects of Liberal Party fundraising.
