Labor seeks inquiry into $10bn IT spend

As the Turnbull government appoints a senior banker to oversee its technology push, the federal opposition says an independent inquiry is needed.

Labor says the new head of the Digital Transformation Agency should immediately order an inquiry into the government's $10 billion spend.

Former National Australia Bank executive Gavin Slater was on Wednesday named as the new chief executive of the DTA - the agency in charge of working with government agencies to improve service delivery and get value for money in technology.

Mr Slater, who starts on May 1, was behind a major overhaul of NAB's technology and improvements to online customer services.

The DTA is reviewing all major IT projects of $10 million value or more across government and the way in which IT is procured.

However, Labor spokesman Ed Husic said the review did not go far enough and Mr Slater should launch an independent review of the digital transformation program and the government's IT spending.

He said a series of failures such as the Census, Centrelink's robo-debt system, the Australian Tax Office's website crashes and the Child Support Agency's upgrade showed why such an inquiry was needed.

"It's staggering the coalition experiences double the digital drama and then doubles the digital spend," Mr Husic said.

The inquiry should examine why so many government projects went wrong, test the quality of remedial action, determine what has been put in place to ensure taxpayers' value for money and set out a plan for improvement.
